‘Zeitoun”—a new work of nonfiction by Dave Eggers—distills the sprawling chaos that followed Hurricane Katrina into a single family’s story. The narrative follows a Syrian-American contractor who navigates the postapocalyptic streets of New Orleans in a second-hand canoe, then mysteriously disappears for several weeks after armed officers take him aboard their boat.
