Op Ed: August Wilson -- showing us how we got here

August Wilson knew that today can only be understood by understanding yesterday -- as individuals, and as a nation. And he knew that history cuts both ways.
For Mr. Wilson, history was family. It was the exuberant expression of the human spirit through jazz solos and blue notes. It was stories, and the tradition of stories being passed from mouth to ear; from generation to generation. But history was also racism and poverty, slavery and Jim Crow, and the anger and despair these outrages brought ....
